Portugal’s euro coins were designed by the artist Vitor Manuel Fernandes dos Santos.He was inspired by historical symbols and the seal of the first Portuguese king, Dom Afonso Henriques.
The lowest-value Portuguese coins feature an image of the royal seal of 1134 along with the inscription ‘Portugal’.
In 1139 he was crowned as the first king of independent Portugal. In 1147, with the support of foreign Crusaders retook Lisbon from the Muslims. Significantly expanded the Portuguese border.

The 10, 20 and 50-cent coins bear the royal seal of 1142.
In 1139 Afonso Henriques (Afonso I) was the first king of Portugal, defeating the Arab rulers of Badajoz, Beja, Lisbon, Evora and Elvas. After these events, Afonso replaced on its flag and coat of arms blue cross on a five (5 defeated enemies!) Boards on a white background. On billboards were shown five silver points. That they originally symbolized already known. Likely meant nail heads on the actual combat shields. Later point got a different meaning. They came to symbolize the five wounds received at the Battle of Afonso (in one version) or coins as king the right to issue its own currency (on the other).
1 and 2 euro coins, Portugal
The €1 and €2 euro coins features the seven castles and five coats of arms, also the royal seal of 1144 .
Son of Henry of Burgundy, Count of Portugal and Teresa of Castile. Born in Gimarayshe. In 1112 the count had inherited his father's title and under age came under the care of the mother, but in 1128 it expelled and took power into their own hands. Alfonso then a few years (1130-1139) by military forces liberated Portugal from the vassals of the kings of Leon. In 1139 he was crowned as the first king of independent Portugal.
