The famous cathedral of Santiago de Compostela features on the national side of the Spanish 1, 2 and 5-cent coins.In 1985, the old town of Santiago de Compostela was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The design of the coins is by Garcilaso Rollán.

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (Catedral de Santiago de Compostela) is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture in Spain and the most important churches of Europe during the Middle Ages.

It was built on the burial place of Saint James the son of Zebedee, one of Christ's disciples. Where the relics of the saint, and here flock to thousands of pilgrims worship him.

Dimensions cathedral: major axis length - 97 meters, width transept - 65 meters, the height of the nave - 20 meters.

In the XVI-XVIII centuries the temple was reconstructed several times and expanded. In the end, the cathedral acquired baroque features.

The 10, 20 and 50-cent coins depict the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, in a design by Begoña Castellanos.Cervantes’ most famous work is his two-volume novel Don Quixote.
