Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa located north of South Africa. The country is sparsely populated because up to 70% of the country is covered by the Kalahari Desert. Botswana's population of only 2 million people is concentrated in the eastern part of the country. Highest elevation are the Otse Hill (1,491 m)

BOTSWANA

The pula is the currency of Botswana. It has the ISO 4217 code BWP and is subdivided into 100 thebe. Pula literally means "rain" in Setswana. The word also serves as the national motto of the country.

The banknote is purple with the art work of a woman teaching pupils. The concept is intended primarily to underscore the contribution of women in the country’s development through education. On the reverse side, there is a picture of a herd of zebras at a waterhole.

The banknote is blue with the portrait of the three chiefs who travelled to Britain in the 1890s to secure the country’s identity. On the reverse side, the picture is an open pit diamond mine and a diamond sorter examining a rough diamond.

The banknote is brown with the portrait of Sir Seretse Khama, the founding president of Botswana. On the reverse side, the picture is of the Okavango Delta swamps, featuring a man on a mokoro (small boat) and a fish eagle.

The banknote is red with the portrait of the composer of the national anthem, Dr K T Motsete. On the reverse side, the picture is of a mining installation.

The banknote is green with the portrait of His Excellency President Lt General Seretse Khama Ian Khama. On the reverse side, the picture is of the National Assembly building.

The current family of banknotes used in Botswana was launched on August 21, 2009. The banknotes family includes five notes in a denomination structure comprising P10, P20, P50 and P100, and P200. 

The Republic of Botswana, formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth on 30 September 1966. Since then, it has maintained a strong tradition of stable representative democracy, with a consistent record of uninterrupted democratic elections and the best perceived corruption ranking in Africa since at least 1998.
Botswana is topographically flat, with up to 70 percent of its territory being the Kalahari Desert. Botswana is a member of the African Union.
